South East Chicago Commission

The South East Chicago Commission (SECC) extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who supported us for “A Night at the Theatre” — an evening that brought together community, culture, and purpose in support of Chicago’s South Side.

Held on Thursday, April 16, the event welcomed guests to a vibrant reception at the Smart Museum of Art, where attendees experienced a unique installation, African Still Life #3: A Tribute to Patric McCoy and Marva Jolly. Presented as part of the Museum’s Threshold Lobby Series and in connection with Theaster Gates: Unto Thee, the installation offered a powerful reflection on preservation, storytelling, and collective memory.

Following the reception, guests attended Court Theatre’s performance of Out Here, a compelling new musical developed in collaboration with the Neubauer Collegium at the University of Chicago. The production delivered an intimate and moving exploration of family, resilience, and the freedom found in transformation—resonating deeply with the spirit of the evening.

As author bell hooks reminds us, “One of the most vital ways we sustain ourselves is by building communities of resistance, places where we know we are not alone.” This sentiment was felt throughout the night, as supporters gathered not only to enjoy the arts, but to strengthen a shared commitment to community impact.

Proceeds from the event directly support SECC’s programs, including the Shirley J. Newsome Beautification Program, which continues to enhance neighborhood spaces and foster pride across the South Side.

“Your support helps the South East Chicago Commission keep pushing forward with our mission of community growth and empowerment. We couldn’t do it without you,” said Board Chair Daryl Newell.

Under the theme “Deep Roots, Strong Future,” the Summit’s opening session will feature a dynamic roundtable and panel discussion examining policy, economic development, and community priorities at the federal, state, city, and neighborhood levels.

South Side Story at The Real Estate Center & Chaddick Institute Annual Conference.

You are invited to engage in a powerful panel on February 12, 2026 taking an insightful look at the diverging forces affecting the South Side, which promise to transform certain neighborhoods as others struggle with another round of divestment and population loss.

“Chicago’s South Side has been rising for decades, shaped by rich culture, deep history, and diversity. While economic investment has taken time to catch up, organizations like the SECC have been laying the foundation since 2010—supporting small businesses and creative entrepreneurs while strengthening commercial corridors through public art, streetscape improvements, and neighborhood identity projects,” says Diane Burnham, Executive Director of South East Chicago Commission.

“Today, investments such as Quantum, the Obama Presidential Library, and the Pullman Gateway are bringing national attention. We look forward to this momentum spreading across the Greater South Side so the people who live and work here can thrive.”

This panel will look at the momentum behind heavily publicized initiatives while reviewing areas that are developing new strategies to jump-start investment.

Panelists Include:

  • David Doig, President, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives
  • Diane Burnham, Executive Director, South East Chicago Commission
  • Rob Rose, Managing Director, Rose Capital Group

The South East Chicago Commission and Special Service Area #61 proudly presented the HPFM Holiday Makers Market on November 16 and December 14, 2024.

Residents and visitors were invited to the festive “Shop Local” indoor holiday experience for two Saturdays at The Promontory (5311 S Lake Park W).

The building was filled with good spirit and cheer. More than two dozen vendors packed the 2nd floor of the Promontory to create a market for guests to shop locally this season.  Vendors offered a range of unique holiday gifts, including fresh-baked goods, original art, jewelry, wellness products, holiday stationery, and custom gift baskets—perfect for seasonal shopping.

Upon entering guests were welcomed by friendly faces at the SECC hospitality desk. Each adult guest was offered a Free reusable shopping bag and a chance to sign up for the live drawings for gift baskets stuffed with local treats and holiday spirit.

The entire space was bustling with vendors and shoppers talking and laughing. Freshly baked treats and beverages from the bar gave sensory satisfaction to treat your taste buds.

DJ Eli set the tempo with cool vibes of old school classic tunes. Kaye Cooksey captured photos of the warm faces that filled the spaces in the Promontory.

Hyde Park School of Dance performers showed off their brilliant choreography in full costumes. Proud parents, shoppers, vendors and staff clapped, cheered and captured the moments of beauty and grace.

Two special guests, 5th Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy and Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson visited with the small businesses, made a couple of remarks on stage, wished us all well for the holidays and did some shopping to support the local vendors.

Alderman Lamont Robinson’s office collected a table full of unwrapped gifts for the 4th Ward Annual Toy Drive benefiting local families with children!

This year, the Holiday Makers Market received sponsorship support from Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP), Joyce Foundation, Choose Chicago, and City of Chicago Mayor’s Road to Recovery Plan.

Special thanks to CEI Media Group for the graphic designs and the production team of Ticina Williams, Eleanor Kole, Rod Sawyer, Raymonde Vance, and Diane Burnham for another fantastic year of the Hyde Park Farmers Market.
