South East Chicago Commission

The South East Chicago Commission (SECC) Staff and Board of Directors proudly presented the 8th Annual South Side Connection Regional Economic Development Symposium: Anchored for Impact on October 9, 2026, at the David Rubenstein Forum at the University of Chicago.

Building on the momentum of two successful Power Hour Lunch sessions earlier in the year, the Symposium brought together entrepreneurs, business executives, community development organizations, government leaders, investors, neighborhood residents, and institutional partners for a morning of meaningful connections, fresh perspectives, and practical opportunities.

The energy in the room reflected a shared commitment to strengthening Chicago’s South Side—and ensuring that neighborhood businesses and residents benefit from the investments shaping our future.

The conversations were powerful. The connections were meaningful. And the opportunities to make a difference continue well beyond the event.

Civic Voice & the Connected City: Getting Involved Before Decisions Are Made

The keynote conversation, moderated by Phaedra Leslie of ALL Construction Group, featured Dulana Reese, Chief of Staff for State Representative Kam Buckner; Janice R. Thomas of Metra; and Joel Hamernick of A More Just Chicago.

The discussion connected major transportation investments, neighborhood economic development, small-business procurement, and Chicago’s proposed city charter to one central message: opportunity means more when communities have a voice in shaping it.

As Leslie summarized:

“Ultimately being anchored for impact means connecting investment with access, opportunity, accountability and community voice.”

Attendees left with practical homework: explore opportunities to do business with Metra, build relationships with public agencies and prime contractors before opportunities are announced, and get involved in civic discussions and decisions affecting their neighborhoods.

People, Place & Possibility: Turning Public Spaces into Community Opportunity

The second panel, moderated by James M. Harris of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, featured Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, General Superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District, and Genora Stone, President of the Jackson Park Conservancy.

The lively conversation explored how neighborhood parks create economic activity, support youth employment, offer small-business contracting and concession opportunities, and strengthen community life.

Ramirez-Rosa captured the broader value of neighborhood parks:

“They make us healthier, they make us safer, and they can help our communities thrive economically.”

Stone offered a direct invitation:

“I encourage you all to be a part, give back in your parks.”

The takeaway was clear: get involved with local Park Advisory Councils, connect young people to employment and programming, explore Park District business opportunities, and participate in decisions about neighborhood improvements.

The Audience Responded!

Interactive polling added another dimension to the Symposium, giving attendees an opportunity to share what they learned and what inspired them.

Responses highlighted strong interest in Chicago’s city charter, Metra improvements and procurement, youth employment, Park District business opportunities, participatory budgeting, and community involvement.

The diverse participation reflected the Symposium’s greatest strength: bringing people from different industries, neighborhoods, and perspectives together to exchange knowledge, build relationships, and identify opportunities for collaboration.
